I have had a busy week, quoting new client work, completing existing client work, sending out prints to lovely customers and all sorts in between! I was ever so lucky to receive a few amazing gifts this week too, including my nancybird bags and this A M A Z I N G print by Jacinta Paterson. How I adore this print titled, 'The Nest', more than words could ever explain..It is H U G E, this is just a tiny snippet of detail to share with you.
Plus, a sneaky peek at our recently acquired Archibald winner Adam Cullen print 'Growler' now in our studio (being put on the wall as I write), a very generous gift from my darling brother and Lisa x

Nancybird, in Berlin!

So, its Monday, Nancybird have this amazing giveaway finishing today, as we all know artists just don't splurge on amazing bags for themselves very often, my studio has been out of power all day so I am stranded on my laptop with limited work to access! Perfect chance to enter!

I would be in Berlin at the drop of a hat to visit a very good friend Zoe, and her two magical girls Indi & Mila! At least the cold can be fun then, hoping for snow and making snowmen! Hopefully Chris will be home too, so we can all ride and go on an adventure in this weather- of course I would still wear awesome clog/ heels, not my gumboots today.

I would jump on my re-vamped bicycle Victoria created by Mrs Fairweather, don my beautifully Australian designed Gorman, vintage blouse from my lovely brother and sis-in-law and Sass & Bide mix and most importantly my Nancybird wallet full of lots of make believe money, my awesome Nancybird black trans-seasonal satchel, and my Nancybird backpack to fit the girls favourite drawing things!
Head off to the local for a fresh pastry and hot coffee, and then jump in the photo booth and get some memorable snapshots! x

I would then like to visit Copenhagen, Barcelona, Beirut, Lisbon and Cape Town in a weirdly indirect way home! xx

January oh January. Another year quickly gone by, and another fresh year to start again on a new list of goals, ideas and amending my very broad 5 year plan! As I get older (and by that I mean the young age of 32), my plans and dreams start to include a farmhouse, organic vegetable patch or a weekender in the bush or the coast - I don't mind, a bathtub with a view of the trees outside would be lovely too! Holidays to book in, adventures to be had! The lists go on, also on that list is more enjoying the small things in life!

Art Prahran is a new apartment building on my street, High Street, Prahran, Victoria. Myself along with four other artists have been selected to compete in the prize of having our artwork adorn the Eastern facade of the building, see my example above. With a brief based on 'Prahran', I created a 'Cool Bird' illustrative and painterly piece with textural and patterned details with a vivid colour palette!

Melbourne Art & Design fair held their first ever Pop Up Market on the site, and the winner of this amazing prize will be announced in January. To vote for me, go to the Art Prahran facebook page, and add as friend then LIKE my illustration in the Artists Submissions folder!

My Home, Ganim's Store, Spring!

Below is a sneak peek into my home, a few shots of things I love, africanesque objects, bowls, typography and colour! I have the Stonnington News shooting a pic of me in my home this Friday for an exciting Street Art project, so this got me thinking of my own things I love to surround myself in my home. From local hand made goods to French and African pieces, some Dutch Tattoo Artist prints by Angelique Houtkamp, a limited edition print by Nathaniel Eckstrom, and a beautiful original by Carey Potter the most quirky local artist there is! A fellow Sagitarrian too!

Its been a busy Spring! The new store opening of good friend and talented business owner Rae Ganims' store on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. A must for anyone seeking that eclectic, unusual and rare present for oneself or somebody lucky! To read more and catch up on Ganim's Store, have a gander through the wonderful Broadsheet blog here. to your own country, someone else’s or one that is international. It could be social, environmental or political; anything that you believe deserves a global audience and could be better seen or understood.

Fat Kids Die Young by Dean Gordon. 'The number of overweight children in Australia has doubled in recent years, with a quarter of children considered overweight or obese. Childhood obesity can lead to many serious ongoing health risks, including Type 2 Diabetes, Asthma and Hypertension. Dinosaur Designs, established in 1987, are now known throughout Australia for their wonderful green attitude and hand made unique pieces, each piece being a one off object d' art and part of a collection.

Made from a recycled resin, Dinosaur Designs are committed to recycling, reusing and are a 100% climate neutral company. With the head office based in Sydney, NSW, there are 5 flagship stores throughout Australia and one in New York (211 Elizabeth Street, cnr Prince St, New York 10012).

The colours are so vivid, with a range of opaque or transparent pieces, and art series look spectacular all grouped together. Below are some of my favourite pieces, they are a perfect gift for any occasion! x

Peppermint Magazine Hand Lettering Feature!

This seasons' Peppermint Magazine had a fabulous feature with my hand lettering for a story on 'What is Beauty'. With several photographers portraits that I worked with, one of them was taken by the lovely and amazing Feather & Stone Photography from Brisbane! It was quite coincidental as we were in communications without knowing how connected we actually were, until they had a sneaky peek and saw my typography on their photo! I was also thrilled to have Sayher Heffernan, local Melbourne photographer, come and take some pictures of me in my studio and my work from the magazine.

National Craft Gallery Ireland

Whilst visiting Kilkenny, Irelands' South Eastern medieval capital, we were fortunate enough to stay in the lovely old historic Georgian 'Dower House' to the Kilkenny Castle called Butler House.
The full Irish breakfast was served in an interesting area of the original Castle, and above the National Craft Gallery and wonderful studios of a selection of local silversmiths and pottery studios.

Two amazing exhibitions are currently on, they are the 21st Century Icons (until 28 July 2011) and exhibition of various artists portrayals of the iconic shapes & styles of jewellery using various materials of new & old, and an exhibition on an iconic US jeweller Bruce Metcalf (until 6th July 2011) based on his studies of nature and forms within, using mixed media.

The function of jewellery has always been to convey status. This was particularly true of the torc, whose ostentatious size and weight by itself could communicate the force and power of the wearer. The bronze and golden neckwear of the Celts is understood to have had a ritual significance, often being buried with the dead as their currency for the next life, to have functioned as a signifier of Royalty, and to have denoted the wearer as a Celt. It sometimes even had practical applications, such as closing a cloak.

In contemporary usage, the torc has become an object of kitsch, often geared towards the tourist. Contemporary examples abound on the web, never managing to really explore the significance of the object and the possibilities of re-interpretation. If we were to design neckpieces now that conveyed something about us - as Irish - to the world, what would they say? And what would they look like? Would they be gold? Recycled? Injection moulded? Would they be images of power and beauty? Shackles? Or blue collars?

I have been a little absent from my arts reflection blog, but only for a very good reason! I have been making my way to a wonderful friends' wedding in Inish Boffin, Ireland, stopping off in Belgium first, it has truly been a joy so far, and I can not wait to see everyone tomorrow evening in time for celebrations!
Whilst in Belgium I absorbed an amazing and rich cultural delight of all senses! Visiting romantic Bruges, Ghent and Brussels, staying the wonderful design hote Be Manos, and discovering some local designers.
One that I discovered was in a gallery of contemporary jewellery named Mei LEE, Rue du Marche au Charbon 15 Kolenmarkt, Brussels.

Tamawa is a local Belgian collaboration who create wonderful rounded and colourful accessories, furniture and lighting design from bakerlite beads. Each piece showases a big round ball, sometimes alone or connected to a family of these rounded balls, and often available as an individual piece of with a whole box of 8 different electrifying colours to swap and change as you wish! These products have a wonderful modern design aesthetic and are packaged in a lovely black box with big bright circles on! To see or read more, click here.

I am currently absent from my usual weekly blogging on my way to a wedding in Ireland after a stop over in Belgium visiting Bruges, Ghent & Brussels with a blog on some beautiful designers coming soon!
I am thrilled to reveal that I have four pieces shortlisted for the 2011 Desktop Create Awards this year, and will be crossing my fingers tightly to win! Chelsea Dunn - Arts Content

There is a cold snap in Melbourne and we are expected to have first snowfall (yes! It snows in Australia!), so I thought of a friend very used to cold snaps, who has just moved back to Australia after some time in beautiful Canada.

Chelsea Dunn, talented lady in everything she touches, from being a commercial graphic designer/ web designer & illustrator, to exploring the world of craft. You name it, she has tried it- and succeeded!

Chelsea was one of my main inspirations to go back and study this year, to learn ceramics and other crafty goodness, as I was so impressed with her creations, and felt it necessary to try new things.

Chelsea is one of those creatives who is naturally wonderful at what she does, but needs to keep stimulated and working on a varied range of projects. Talented illustrator, designer, quilter, glass blower, ceramicist, web designer to name a few!

With a love of mini daschunds, sloths and drawing horses in suits, Chelsea and I met one flight from Sydney to Melbourne three years ago after attending the design conference Semi Permanent.

It was only a one hour flight, but we remainded in touch, and our love of design, illustration & mini daschunds along with similar freelance career paths, kept us connected. Welcome back Chelsea! x

'One of many things I have hanging on the walls in our condo is a framed mini installation of tiny ceramic vessels (about 1"w x 1/2" h) which I made by 'throwing off the hump', glazing and then filling some with bits of broken green and blue glass (thanks SarahA!). The glass melts in the kiln and creates a really interesting look where it's cracked underneath but smooth and perfect on top. So easy to make but has a really nice visual appeal. I want to make another one!'

I was walking around my local hood after visiting Signed&Numbered gallery, passing by my favourite little cycle wares store called Northside Wheelers - Purveyor of fine cycling wares. Shop 2, 155 Greville Street, Prahran. The styling, the substance and the selection in this little place is amazing, and if you are one to love collectors items, vintage and new cycle gear its a must visit! I walk past often and admire the hand written sign in the window, the clashing of primary colours spilt across the floor, and all the quirky intricate oddities inside the store. I noticed a beautiful painted wooden cube installation in the windows, so went it.
Malachi Moxon, the creator of this store explained that each wooden piece skillfully decorated by hand was done by his friend and artist Darren Henderson, aka dirtygood. The collection of solid wooden cubes were part of an even bigger installation regretfully I missed, but now each individual block is for sale. Oh goodie! They start from $200 per cube. The colour palettes are a mish mash of blues/purples and pinks, reds with lovely geometric shapes & pattern, and the natural texture of the wood a feature.
The cubes decorated in paint, see images below, are painted on several different sides. Each one is totally unique and just as enjoyable as the other, and all I can imagine is having several of these in my home!
So for now I share them with you, and hope that you can pass by and check them out too. A similar style exhibition titled Get Lost, Find Something was on at Gorker Gallery recently, of a collection of Darrens' owl cubes. Malachi's blog is worth a visit too, full of his own imagery (most taken from on his wheels of things he sees), and beautiful insightful poetry & quotes.

Artboy Gallery - Jeff Gardner

Artboy Galler y is a modern looking art space that has ''gatecrashed its way'' into Greville Street, Prahran. Artboy brings together emerging and established Melbourne artists in this large, white space. Showcasing over 20 various artists from street artists to photographers, illustrators and abstract artists the aim is to provide a variety of modern artwork that is affordable and exciting.
As I walk past this space almost everyday I often observe the change of artists from the street view, but recently I wandered inside to have a better inspection on what was on show. While I was looking at the back of the space I was thrilled to discover some beautiful and playful etchings and hand written poetry by printmaker Jeff Gardner.

Jeff Gardner is a well established printmaker and painter who lives & works in his studio at Porcupine Flat near historic Maldon in Victoria, who also writes & illustrates creative verse. Gardner and Kareen Anchen have set up a publishing studio named Cascade Print Workshop, where they have a gallery space, offer one day workshops and use of the print room. See here for more details.

He has an abiding love of "nonsense" poetry and children's picture book illustration and this is present in his own whimsical interpretation of the world, through his art and the titles of his prints. Imagination, drawing, materials and technical exploration are the cornerstones of his artistic practice.

Artboy have a large selection of Gardners' beautiful limited prints, all hand signed and most have a quirky little poem of nonsense underneath- again all hand written by Gardner himself. I absolutely fell in love with his detailed, fluid etching prints as they took me away to his whimsical world, with young and innocent characters and an eclectic & humorous tone. Colours ranging from earthy charcoal, browns and hues of aquamarine to navy. His work below, 'Mistaken for a Duck', my favourite, and perfect as a gift.

National Gallery Celebrates 150 Years

It is a lovely Winters' day in Melbourne, and around the National Gallery of Victoria is energy and excitement as they celebrate their 150th Birthday Anniversary with events going on between the two Galleries, St Kilda Road, and the Federation Square NGV. Orange balloons align the streets, talks, discounts on exhibitions, live performances and wonderful discounts to members' in all stores. Art is brought outdoors, as the Gallery celebrates the old & new.

Last night we went to see Jack Productions - Animal, at the Malthouse Theatre in Southbank, playing in the Beckett Theatre until May 28, 2011. We had a wine with the choreographer, Lucas Jervies beforehand (lucky we know him!) and were given a rundown of the creation of the show and why he chose the abstract and unique choreography of dance to suit the diverse and equisite female dancers collaborating together within his interesting and abstract subject matter of social environments and evolution.

Being new to contemporary dance and a style as unique as this, I was glad we did have the private rundown, so as we watched the beautiful and intricate forms and shapes these woman would make, enhanced by amazing, dramatic sound and lighting we could understand it! Although the universal story and what was being portrayed became obvious. Touching on womens' behaviours & relationships, pecking orders and status within a group, conforming to social environments and standing alone, acceptance of strangers, and emotions.

Lucas expressed the excitement of working with such prestigious and talented women, who all have their own 'day jobs', and gathered together for this unique one off performance created for them. The performance was mesmerising, dramatic, passionate and delicate, and a truly unique experience!

I have though been enjoying my new phone, and all the wonderfulness of the filter camera applications. These days, anyone can be a photographer- well amateur one :) I am sure professionals despise these filters, but they really turn pictures into something else!

Tiger Mum, has been shortlisted for an illustration award! I also find it amusing to look back at work, and in one instance where I had to draw Paul McCartney, I supplied three versions, as below! People and chricatures havent been my strength, and the editor & I had a laugh when I produced these. Guess which one was selected?

Behind the large warehouse doors, is a stunning modern open plan studio that houses 3 brilliantly creative minds (and a couple of freelancers), greeted by a huge horse, and with a large kitchen area and marble table as the central focal point, the feeling is of family and a close tight knit team.

Established in 1996, and created from the minds of risk taking third year college students, Brett Phillips and David Roennfeldt, the name 3 Deep Design originated from 3 young designers, sitting 3 deep in the humble beginnings of a small residential studio. The Australian Ballet being one of their first clients, is still working with 3 Deep Design today, proving that these young starters knew how to nurture relationships and continue to create excellent work. Moving forward to 2011, and 3 Deep Design have expanded their client base to include some of the worlds’ largest figures in fashion and music including Steven Klein & Madonna for Louis Vuitton, The Australian Ballet, David Bromley and Six Scents.

A recent project named Six Scents (Series 1 to 3) has been one where image making and exploration along with brand development for a high end limited edition parfum series has taken 3 Deep Design on a three year journey thus far.

3 Deep Design were commissioned to design the visual identity, packaging design and all related communications materials for Six Scents. The project involved six designers from six different parts of the world being invited to remember the most definitive experiences of their youth that led to their sense of identity today and to recall some of their most intimate childhood memories involving the sense of smell. The designers involved created the parfum, bottled in a beautiful bottle, and package of beautiful detail designed by 3 Deep Design. An exquisite creative collaboration, wherein each bottles’ packaging, along with the scent, is entirely different to the other, yet just as lovely to see, touch and smell. As a luxury brand, these were only ever produced as limited editions, and stocked in a selection of boutique retailers worldwide.

Being able to visit on the open studio night, part of AG Ideas was a lovely treat.

It is a rare thing for this to happen, and myself along with 6 other students were able to really understand how this studio runs and works, and be shown some beautiful work, along with just have a thorough talk about process and clients, challenges of manufacturing books & bespoke products offshore, and the funny stories of the beginning of 3 Deep Design. Presented by Lachlan, senior designer (although they prefer there to be no titles/hierarchy) David and Brett.

The process from brief to developing the final product is research, research, research! Creating connections, collating images, referencing pieces of history including quotes and poems, and literally compiling these collections of reference material on the floor in different order (something they have done since the very beginning). Fastidious research, then usually one concept will be presented to the client, but this will be the one and only concept, and really, this makes sense as Brett Phillips states: Why present more options, when there is only one solution?

3 Deep Publishing is another area of 3 Deep Design, and the publishing side of the business is not only great for promotion, but for bespoke projects that are just plain beautiful. Published books have been created for artist David Bromley, Tim Richardson, Thames & Hudson to name a few. The layout process, not only completed with the Adobe software, starts on the floor, page by page until final, just like the research piles!

Something tells me this studio need not promote too much, with international representation and a collection of high-end luxury clients it would be an honor to have them work on your brand.

I attended an Art Auction last Monday in Melbourne, amazed to be surrounded by such high profile original Australian and foreign works from artists Adam Cullen, John Olsen, David Bromley, signed prints by Dali (yes, Salvador Dali!), Charles Blackman to name a few, all being auctioned to art collectors & art lovers.

Also in the huge mix of impressive artworks were amazing original canvas paintings by numerous Aboriginal artists, and of them, two in-particular that just instantly resonated with me immediately for her use of vibrant colour, fluidity in forms. Part of Josie Kemarres' collection titled ''My Country After the Rain''.

Josie Petrick Kemarre has emerged from Utopia as an artist displaying her innovative interpretations of her dreamings, culture & religion through her bold & dynamic approach to canvas.

Josie creates an amazing visual harmony with dot construction, capturing the rich essence of the Utopian landscape as depicted in the desert. Her work is a fine example of the developmental of Central Desert dot painting from the traditional dot construction to a fusion of abstracted forms manifesting a spiritual and cultural celebration.

With collections in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and selected exhibitions in New York City, China, Hong Kong and nation-wide, Josie Kemarre is predicted to be the successor of abstraction in the Central Desert Art.

Jasper Knight, is a young and high profile modern Australian artist. With a Master of Arts, majoring in painting & drawing and growing up in Sydney, he is a 6 time finalist for the Archibald Prize and four times for the Wynne Prize. With collections locally & internationally and a string of awards and scholarships behind him, I visited his latest exhibition ''Roll-On, Roll-Off'' at the wonderful Metro Gallery, (1214 High Street, Armadale, Victoria). The exhibition is highly influenced by growing up near the ports and harbours of Sydney, and Port Melbourne, Botany Bay & Port Adelaide. It felt very masculine and bold, yet I still was attracted to the work, particularly the boats and the bright colourways.

Boasting an array of highly architectural and linear forms, from transport (cars & ships) to wharves in a stunning selection of the primary colours and mixed media of plywood, old signs, found plastic tiles and sheets, each piece captures a moment in time, in an abstract way.

Beth-Emily has a beautiful eye for detail when it comes to her work, and a special interest in all things flora/ fauna, fashion and ornithology. Stunningly intricate studies of these subjects, drawn by a variety of mediums of pencil, graphite and pen are then subjected to a treatment of watcercolor washes & ink injections that create amazing depth and tone to her fine pieces.

Based in Hobart Beth-Emily graduated from the Tasmanian School of Fine Art in 2007, and after a couple of projects in the creative industry that werent so creative it seemed, Beth-Emily set about establishing herself as an illustrator whilst working in commercial design part time.

The personal work I create for Beth-Emily is based on my long-held passion for figurative illustration. I regard my collection of illustrations to be like a public record of my personal exploration and interpretation of forms found in nature. As an illustrator, my style is constantly evolving over time. But of late, my style comes as a result of my process, where I study a subject closely, recognise its unique idiosyncrasies and then build upon these characteristics using my imagination and through mark-making, textures and layers.

Her mixed media artworks feature my all time favourite things: animals, birds, nature in forms of plants and mushrooms and intense colour! Lots of it. Skillfully using gouache & vinyl to create an amazing array of endless colour, Heart is a Star (above) is an example of this amazing medium. Below, in her piece Waking World, Jamison mixes 2D elements of paper cut out/ collage and gouche with a lovely soft earthy palette of hues of greens and blues, mixed with pops of bright red and pinks, and the use of soft white repeated pattern on the cactus that gives this piece an extra layer of magic!

Jamisons' list of recognition, awards & achievements can be seen on the Sophie Gannon website, and is rather extensive! But most recently Jamison has been selected as a finalist in the Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize at the Bendigo Art Gallery.

The Archibald Art Prize 2011 finalists were finally announced today, and among the 41 finalists is local Melbourne illustrator Sonia Kretschmar with her stunningly detailed & original piece titled The Heart of Things, a portrait of Cassandra Golds, acrylic on wood. This exciting news that Kretschmar is now in a league of her own, with the likes of Ken Done, Adam Cullen, Del Kathryn Barton has been brewing over the last few days on facebook, and until today it could not be announced!

Sonia talks of her piece:

Now that I have illustrated three of Cassandra's novels, I thought the time was right to attempt to paint a portrait of her. After meeting her a couple of times last October, where I had the chance to do some sketches and photography, I mulled over the best way to represent her. Reading a passage from her latest novel "The Three Loves of Persimmon", the lines "Persimmon gazed at him. For a moment she had the strangest feeling that there was a bird trapped inside her ribcage, as if her bones were its prison and it was flapping frantically against them, trying to get out. She opened her mouth, but could find no words."As birds, and cages, and cats all seem to be recurring themes in her work, those lines were the perfect catalyst for my concept. Dressing her in a lacy, voluminous skirt also seemed a perfect reflection of her "other time, other worlds" sensibility.

Sonia also celebrates tonight the launch of her new illustrated book titled Song of The Dove, at Readings, Carlton. Her first hard cover picture book written by Errol Broome, a love story, based on the opera composer Vincenzo Bellini.

Sonia has a wonderfuly unique style of illustration, along with an extensive list of high profile clients. Being a well established illustrator in Australia, I find her style provocative and interesting, featuring quirky sexy characters in a hand painterly feel. Kretschmars' work shared across archival prints, jewellery, publications and ''made to order'' tees are all available through her website.

In my opinion Kretschmar is a supreme talent!

Not only taking the illustration world by storm, she is also dedicated in supporting and spreading the word of http://www.facebook.com/pages/Halfway-Home-Animal-Rescue-AUS/197536100280944 Halfway Home Animal Rescue, which is a site dedicated to those animals needing adoption or foster care.

I first had the privilege of meeting this amazing artist Sonia Kretschmar approximately 6 years ago, and still have the postcards she gave me. It was a highlight to meet such an interesting and talented creative, and to remain in touch through Illustrators Australia, I cross my fingers for her to win this years' Archibald Prize!!!

Just to mention, another favourite from the finalists was this mixed media piece by artist Jeremy Kibel.

An old local for me, but not an old art gallery based in Port Melbourne called Mars Gallery currently has an exhibition featuring two artists: Jeremy Kibel, and installation artist in the upstairs gallery: Greer Taylor.

Greer Taylor / String Theory exhibition is a series of works in conjunction with the Melbourne L'Oreal Fashion Festival 2011. Her pieces are inspired by the qantum theory that suggests the earth is made up of vibrating strings, considered to be the elemantal force of existence.

Strings as we know them in everyday life… long thin malleable forms variously called, yarn, thread, strings… are everywhere, a building block of our everyday existence, we only have to look down at the clothes we wear to see multiple “strings” being enmeshed together to create protection and /or decoration for our vulnerable bodies.

Taylors' work is eye catching in shape and texture and seemingly relatively simple in theory. But when these installations are viewed on a close up, the intricate work & detail of creating these bounds of string and natural found objects is obvious. The piece I enjoy the most is titled 'Fragile Surface', knitted tin wire, metal, plastic and fabric, it takes up a lot of space and looks like an intricate weave of surfaces being pulled and supporting one another. Based on an analogy for our planet, Taylor explores the idea of these connecting surfaces being different aspects of our existence, whereas one layer will be removed and all other forms are affected, as in life. “I see the universe as something in flux, passing in and out of existence, that a proceeding though can transport you to another state of being. With this in mind, these works are made in honour of all my friends that have passed on. For me, creating these works is a gift to them, in hope that they have moved on to a happier state.” Jeremy Kibel 2010

These pieces are large in scale, mixed media on lovely hand made paper, and are a soft gentle approach at the topic of 'Shadows: Death in Art'. With a stenciled spray paint effect style using black against pops of bright aqua blues, lime and the ocassional pop of pink, I presume from the exhibition title these pieces are titled lovingly after friends who have passed. The works are attractive and I could imagine that can resonate with anyone who has experienced the loss of someone close to them! I love the topic in discussion in the artworks, and the almost calm silence of the birds themselves.

Unfortunately I missed the evening discussion of a panel of artists (PRUE GIBSON, SAM LEACH, JO BERTINI, JEREMY KIBEL, ANNEE JUDELL, ASHLEY CRAWFORD and JULIA DE VILLE) discuss deathly art imagery and iconography, the deathlike trance of the art market, the death of sincerity in art, the comforts of facing death, mortal anxieties and our collective need to talk/write/paint and sculpt about death...and therefore life.

I did a portrait shoot on the weekend with a beautiful friend, and owner of Alfie & Nina swimwear.

With an old school Nikon SLR, and down at the beautiful Sandy Point. As I took the shots, I also used my DSLR to see what they will look like. I love the colours and patterns of the towels, the swimsuit, the chairs. Props are all the models! Thank-you Jo & Nina x

Matte Stephens, a self taught mid-century artist based in upstate New York City has been conquering the art world & recognised global brands, such as American Express, with his original artwork inspired by modern art & graphic design.

Recently Stephens created artworks specific for our own Melbourne, Perth & Sydney, and has just exhibited at my local much LOVED & FAVOURITE Outre Gallery in Melbourne, with two city-specific mini shows about to launch in Outre Sydney & Outre Perth! Oh, and I bought this charming print! (Below).

Quoted as saying animals are more kind than humans, I love Stephens’ way of thinking!

Beautiful blossoming birds and an array of quirky forest and domestic animal characters feature heavily in his retro styled, soft paletted artworks.

Not only do I love the sense of humour and irony in the stories, the playfulness and style; I also adore the beautiful candid buildings and architecture representative of each city Stephens chooses to paint.

Making them a huge sentimental prize to the purchaser, and a cool piece of desirable artwork in general!

Upon setting foot on our shores, I think Stephens will fall in love with our eccentric Australian

birds & unique furry creatures...

The kangaroo, koala bear, kookaburra, emu, dingo, wallaby & platypus to name a few!

Our interesting architecture, beautiful coastlines, and award winning wines.

But mostly I think Stephens will love our down to earth and sleepier cities displaying Autumn leaves of gold & red, clean and fresh with change of season and bursting with their own essence of creativity.

Wow! Laith McGregor is an amazing artist I discovered at Heidi Museum of Modern Art, who was also part of the Freehand: Australian Drawing Exhibition. Graduating from Victorian School of Arts in 2007, McGregor has attracted a huge following, most notably from high profile collectors and large state institutions, having an exhibition in France this February, and selling out most shows before opening night. I am afraid I had previously missed his other local Melbourne exhibitions, and am now so in love with his work!

Do I love a beard, but these simple ''everyday biro'' drawn illustrations with JURASSIC sized beards are just totally impressive! Not only are the faces so detailed and intricate the artworks are larger than life in size. They make me want to go swimming in the beards and get lost amongst the millions of biro lines in a biro dominated world! I can imagine the many nights after nights of drawing these lines and curls & patterns, and respect the time it would have taken to create the final pieces.
What utter patience, determination and an obvious passion McGregor must have.

Freehand: Recent Australian Drawing

I visited the Heide Museum of Modern Art yesterday and went to the Freehand: Recent Australian Drawing Exhibition, showcasing works by 25 contemporary Australian artists. I have been looking forward to getting out to Heidi (it is a little North of Melbourne, but actually not that far!), and seeing this exhibition as it features some of Del Kathryn Bartons' recent works, who is recognised as Australias' leading figurative painter of her generation, and an artist of whom I really enjoy. On 7 March 2008, it was announced that Barton had won the 2008 Archibald Prize for portraiture, for You are what is most beautiful about me, a self portrait with Kell and Arella, a self-portrait with her two children and an event that brought her to the spotlight.

'This painting celebrates the love I have for my two children and how my relationship with them has radically informed and indeed transformed my understanding of who I am.
Both my children have taken my world by storm and very little compares to the devotion I feel for them both. The intensity of this emotion is not something that I could have prepared myself for. The alchemy of life offered forth from my inhabitable woman's body is perhaps the greatest gift of my life'

Bartons' works for this exhibition at Heidi were much more sexual and pornographic with a strong reference to animals and gestures towards exploring sexual guilt and fantasy. Much more simple pen line drawings with much less colour. Which an artist friend, Sim, I was with, pointed out they looked a little 'unfinished' because of this, and I agreed, although the style was still very much her own, the artworks with the detailed colour, almost pixelated are much more enjoyable to view.

Its been a week between updates, but this one is worth it! My new favourite local retail gallery/ destination shop/ cafe venture called The Colour Lab found at 385 High Street, Prahran, which also houses residence to a wonderful local artist, Jessie Breakwell.
I have been in many times since it opened its doors only late last year, situated next door to the Victorian Gardens, and each time I have an overall sense of absolute calm & energy! It must be to do with all the wonderful bright colours in way of amazing & modern local & international homewares, fabrics, furniture and artwork, healthy food, fresh juices & coffee on offer aswell. If you are lucky enough to chat to the amazingly passionate owner Roz Mackay, you will be inspired and touched by her dedication to her concept store, being a way of life energised by colour, and visualised before it became a reality!

'Colour is energy, emotion & personal expression in all that we do, how we live, what we eat & how we feel.

Over the past weeks, we have had many spiritual guides come out of the blue to see & feel the energy within the store, & as they say, it really has tremendous powers on the ground floor with all the colour, very calming as well as extremely energizing. All you need to do is to sit back, enjoy a great coffee made by one of our wonderful barristas, or one of the daily fresh teas & take it in, it will revitalise your charkras without even trying!''

Colour Lab will also be holding workshops upstairs in their studios, which is a great way to connect to their customer, with two being available at present. Workshops on all sorts of things including tarot reading, art workshops, and creating your own vision boards for life.

Breakwell will also be holding painting workshops in her interactive gallery at The Colour Lab.

'I'm not really into realism, there's enough drama going on in the world at the moment so I prefer to take a lighter look at life.'

What draws me to Breakwells' work is the diversion from reality to a colourful and enchanting world of animals and fun. Easy to look at and be drawn in, her quirky & offbeat artwork is influenced by the enigmatic Brett Whiteley, particularly in her Nudes with a fluid shape & form, and French fauvist Henri Matisse.
With such a fascinating background, Breakwell was once the nanny to the Osbournes when their hit reality television series first aired. Realising her dream to be an artist, Breakwell retired from the show to pursue this dream in Australia where she continued to expand her education and become involved in shows worldwide.

I must admit, another reason I am in love with her work is because Breakwell paints gorgeous and simplistic 'dog portraits', and amazingly she has painted two miniature daschunds just like my mums, Bella & Mandy!

Inez Storer

An amazing Californian collage artist that I recently discovered is Inez Storer. Born in 1933, Storer has studied at the Art Center in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Art Institute, the University of California at Berkeley, and the San Francisco College for Women, ultimately receiving her B.A. from Dominican University in San Rafael, California in 1970. Storer received her M.A. from San Francisco State University in 1971. All her art education makes me pleased that I have decided to further my own education this year!

Storers' style grabs me with her use of colour, texture and layers, peeling back elements and building them up again. I love the unusual style of characters and the use of simple typography in her pieces; both aspects that I am always deeply drawn to.
The subject matter is very sensitive, choosing to depict political moments in history, and in some instances direct references to political leaders.

Storer applies her art to not only paintings but also to pillows - which make for a very interesting pillow point of discussion!

I usually start my work by marking the surface of the painting, adding more and more, then peeling away the surface to the first marks. It seems a metaphor of one's own life, as the future becomes enmeshed with the past.

Most of the time I enter my studio with an agenda, but then something happens, and I let the painting take me on its own journey. To be surprised while painting is the real experience, the reason to keep on doing the work. I have objects, bits and pieces, images cut from a myriad of sources and whatever I can collect that inform my work, or sometimes I actually attach materials of some kind to the surface of the painting. It is a way of going shopping every time I am in the studio. And artists love to shop in whatever form that activity can take.

We are all like blotters. I am a blotter, absorbing all the different aspects of what I experience. Painting is evolutionary, and a grand experience.

At art school we are currently working on some composition drawings, and learning the principles of light & shade through different freehand shading and cross hatching techniques, as part of the Drawing component- Brief 1.

Karlee Rawkins

A second artist that I discovered at the Flinders Lane Gallery recently is Sydney based artist Karlee Rawkins. I was immediately drawn to Rawkins' work for both her use of bold colours and the use of animals and birds as her subject matter. I often use both in my artwork, reminiscing of my years spent in South Africa and to the overwhelming sense of being I felt living in such a colourful and layered country.

Rawkins' enjoys to challenge her viewers by creating a connection to the imagery whilst emphasizing the subjects vulnerability. 'Most recent her attention has extended to include the forms of forest flora. No less tenderly depicted these decorative and ornately colourful fruiting trees are pared back to their symbolic essence. Budding with fruit their hulking trunks remind us of the Bohdi Tree, that eternal symbol of awakening experience and offer comfort in their patchwork canopy.'

Attracted to the ways in which pattern and line intersect with form and colour Rawkins’ skilfully integrates discernible representation with subtle abstraction. Pointed ears become daring triangles, nimble legs yield to their verticality and wings splay out to form intersecting globes across the picture plane. This dexterous sense of composition and lively mark making is captivating, revealing both child-like veneration and sophisticated appreciation for the form and character of her subjects. Thus Rawkins’ paintings hold within them a range of concerns from the personal to the global, questioning our relationship to nature and more broadly to themes of mortality and even extinction.

The animals and their beautiful silence, the uneven and unusually placed brush strokes and contrasting colours are so absolutely inviting.

I am mesmerised by her paintings and the particular naive style of Rawkins; nothing being perfect or uniform, feeling so free and fluid.

I hope to achieve this in my work throughout the year.

Mami Yamanaka

I recently discovered Japanese born, and Melbourne based artist Mami Yamanaka at Flinders Lane Gallery, on Flinders Lane, Melbourne. Being a lover of fine pen detailed drawings and patterns inparticular; Mamis' pieces caught my eye for both these reasons. Stunningly delicate, Yamanakas' work is repetitive, beginning from one tiny dot on paper, expanding so perfectly into a beautiful and fluid piece of artwork. Graphic in style, it is the interesting pastel palette, contrasted with pop colours of bright pinks and pure black that I am also drawn to in her collections.

‘For me, pattern making always represents creating something new, and the pattern will expand and continuously grow if I keep drawing with a circular motion outward. I believe we all create something new for our life starting from a tiny dot, and it will continuously grow to the extent of what we would like it to be.’

Lena Maikon learned to knit and crochet from her grandmother at the age of five in her hometown of Novosibrisk, Russia. She picked up the hobby again many years later, as a form of creative therapy. This quickly turned into a passion and profession. Lena often uses unconventional materials in her designs, and dreams of creating a knitted and crocheted world. She crafts socks, shoes, dresses, handbags, flowers, vases, and light fixtures using not-so-traditional techniques. Wednesdays' Wedding!

This Wednesdays Wedding is my all time favourite Australiana country wedding. Situated in Victorian country, on the bridal couple Karli & Russ's homestead, with a huge marquee and gorgeous vintage themed games spread across the lawn. Entrance signs, badges, tennis table, bottchee, juggling balls and even a surprise clown visit in the middle of the afternoon!

The highlights for me were being involved from the beginning, from working with Karli on her bespoke invitation set and seeing her personality thrown into the event. Also, witnessing the bridal dance, a bit of a funny affair, at 3am the morning before the big day, then sharing champagne & sausage rolls over getting our hair done that morning, and not to forget showing how the country guy could use his old & dirty coffee machine as out there ''we just drink instant!''... Great memories!

Today I enrolled into my Arts & Photography course, collected my art supplies for the year ahead, put a name on my locker and draw, had a photo taken for my new Student ID then had lunch and a beer with a girlfriend at the new Brunswick Street Hooked to express my apprehensions of going back to school !

I never would have thought I would be giving up the lifestyle of a graphic designer for fashion with all the perks, discounts & socialising that it offered, BUT to work from my own home studio based in Prahran was another thing! Equalling total luxury of freedom, working your own hours, choosing your clients, coffee breaks with other freelancers and cooking dinners early and with love!

Anyway, the year is about to change & I dont think I am ready for the routine, but the opportunity that I have is so amazing I must admit I am excited!

I would love to hear from other ''mature agers'' that went back to school, or are still there and what advice they can give me!
